Dr. Julie Gerberding
Centers for Disease Control
1600 Clifton RD NE MS D66

Atlanta, GA  30333

Dear Dr. Gerberding,

I am writing to ask your assistance and guidance in obtaining alternatives for those vaccines that use aborted fetal cell lines as the cell substrate for cultivating them, namely, Rubella, Chickenpox and Hepatitis-A.  I am  greatly concerned with the public health and safety, which is currently at risk as a result of the growing awareness of the source of these vaccines.  Many parents are refusing these immunizations for their children and many pediatricians are refusing to dispense them.

Dr. Gerberding, I know that what I am asking is not only necessary to protect the health and safety of the American public, but it is also entirely feasible.  Alternatives are already available for other vaccines such as chick embryo and Vero cell lines. Japan has alternatives for both Rubella and Hepatitis-A, which utilize animal cell lines as opposed to the aborted fetal cell lines.  The Kitasato Institute produces the Takahashi strain from rabbit kidney cells for Rubella and Kaketsuken's Chemo-therapeutic Institute produces Aimmugen using monkey kidney cells.   If human cells are "preferred" for the cultivation of the vaccine strains, then why not consider using human cell lines that do not pose the moral problems of those that are derived from abortion, such as spontaneous abortion (miscarriage) or discarded placentas and umbilical cords?  In addition, there is already a licensed rubella vaccine that was produced by Merck prior to the use of aborted fetal tissue that the FDA tells me could be re-produced.

I want to assure you that I do support immunizations but I also realize that unless something is done, our country could be facing a serious public health problem and possibly, severe epidemics. This situation, combined with the recent reports of possible safety concerns in some vaccines will cause even more people to shy away from important immunization and should be of great concern to the Centers for Disease Control.  Please seriously consider the need to request that the Department of Health and Human Services provide any necessary funding to the National Institutes of Health and the pharmaceutical industry to help alleviate this problem.

Sincerely,
