The PepsiCo Boycott - Brief
Background
PepsiCo has signed agreements with
biotechnology company, Senomyx, to develop artificial flavor enhancers for their
beverages. Under the agreement, PepsiCo will pay for the research and
development, plus royalties to Senomyx for every product sold using their flavor
enhancers. But Senomyx is doing that research and development using human
embryonic kidney (HEK-293) obtained from an elective abortion. All efforts
to dissuade both Senomyx and PepsiCo from using this technology have fallen on
deaf ears, resulting in our launch of an official boycott of all PepsiCo
beverages and beverage subsidiaries that they own. See our one page
flyer that lists their products, background and mailing information at
www.cogforlife.org/pepsiflyer.pdf
What can you do?
-
Boycott ALL PepsiCo beverages!
-
Print the one page flyer linked
above and distribute it far and wide! You may want to take it to your
local grocery store or favorite restuarant and let them know why you will no
longer be buying PepsiCo products from them.
-
Write to PepsiCo and tell them of
your intent to boycott. Be aware that their responses via email are
coming by way of a form letter, dismissing public concerns and in some
cases, with deceptive language that might make an uniformed consumer believe
that its not true. Don't fall for it! When pressed with the
truth, PepsiCo will admit it. But its important to word your letters
carefully so they cannot dismiss your concerns. Below are 2 sample
letters you can use for writing. Simply copy/paste them into your own
letter and personalize if you wish to add more.
| (Letter 1) Your first contact with PepsiCo
(edit and personalize but be sure to include the facts) |
(Letter 2) When PepsiCo
writes back to tell you this research is the "gold standard" use/edit
this in response: |
|
Dear PepsiCo:
It has come to my attention
that you have contracted with Senomyx to develop flavor enhancers for
your beverages. Because they are using human embryonic kidney
cells that were derived from an electively aborted baby for the research
and development of these flavors, I wish to inform you that I will
no longer purchase any PepsiCo beverages.
I understand that under your
agreement with Senomyx, you are paying for that research and development
and additionally will pay royalties for all PepsiCo products sold using
Senomyx flavor enhancers. Thus, you have both the
responsibility and capability to change that technology or completely
sever your agreement.
Until this happens, I intend
to boycott your products, advise all stores that sell them why I am not
buying PepsiCo and advise all of our friends, family and co-workers to
do the same. Please advise me how you intend to proceed.
Sincerely....
|
Dear PepsiCo:
I am appalled with your
response that the technology being utilized by Senomyx is "the gold
standard" for research in the industry, and thus somehow acceptable to
the public!
Since when does utilizing and
profiting from the remains of innocent aborted children become the
normal method of conducting business? Are you not aware that by
their own admission, Senomyx could just as easily be using Chinese
Hamster Ovary cells or insect cells? Their own patents note that
these cell lines work just as well if not better!
Your incredible lack of
concern for the moral sensibilities of the American public is completely
unacceptable and only furthers my determination to ensure that everyone
I know is made fully aware of what you are doing. This boycott
will continue and grow until you publicly announce the end of your
arrangement with Senomyx. Until then, your products are off limits
- and off my grocery list!
Sincerely....

Frequently Asked Questions:
What about other PepsiCo products?
Right now we are mostly concerned
with those products under development using HEK-293 because it is far better if
we can stop it before it comes to market. We know its tough to try to
boycott all the products PepsiCo has on the market such as Frito Lay, Rice-A-Roni,
Aunt Jemima, Quaker. It becomes nearly impossible to shop! But by
targeting the heart of the problem - their beverages - we can have a much
greater impact!
What about other companies using
Senomyx?
They are next! But if we are
successful with the PepsiCo boycott, there is a good chance these companies will
in turn end their Senomyx partnership when they see the hit that PepsiCo is
bound to take in their sales. If you are repulsed enough to take this a
bit further right now, then by all means, stop using Nestle and Cadbury Adams
LLC products as well. Do not buy Nestle coffee creamers or Maggi
soup products as these are products utilizing Senomyx right now. And their
chocolate products are suspect, but not yet confirmed. For Cadbury Adams
LLC: Do not buy Dentyne, Trident, Bubblelicious, Stride, Chiclets,
Chlorets, Freshen Up gums, Certs breath mints, Sour Patch kids or Halls Cough
Drops.
Your link is no good! I looked at
Senomyx website and they don't list these companies.
In early July, Senomyx removed the
names of all their partners and collaborators from their website. This
just means that the boycott is working! See our press release below:
You can run but you
can't hide: Senomyx deletes partners' info from
website Not to worry though - we found one
they missed:

Just in case they decide to take this down too, we did a webpage snapshot of the
document:
http://www.cogforlife.org/senomyxPartnerProof.pdf
How do we know if any of this is
really true since the companies seem to deny it?
We have compiled all the proof you
would ever need into the following link:

releases:
